Brian William Byrnes

| Thomas Dongan Council Brothers It is with heavy hearts that we relay the sad news that Brian William Byrnes a dear friend of the Knights, passed away peacefully in Fort Lauderdale on November 5th, 2025, and his soul now rests in God’s hands. Brian William Byrnes November 5, 2025 Brian William Byrnes, 48, of Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away peacefully in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on November 5, 2025. He bounced into Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, for the first time on January 5, 1977. He spent his early years finessing a lifelong love for everything New York, attending Our Lady of Angels grammar school, then moving on to LaSalle Academy High School. Lowens Pharmacy became his main outpost for a while, offering him a firm anchor with the neighbors and neighborhood. He eventually served his favorite city as an 18-year employee of the N.Y. Dept. of Sanitation. Brian was a big guy, with a heart to match. He’d dress as Santa, take pictures with the Lowens locals, would turn scarlet from laughing so hard, and could crack ribs with his mighty hugs. He’d bristle if you said anything bad about his hometown teams, the Giants and the Mets. Brian honored his Irish heritage as a member of the Emerald Society and the Holy Name Society, while the Thomas Dongan Council #1251 of the Knights of Columbus also figured prominently in his life. In a more secular vein, Brian loved his cars—he’d won several car-show trophies with his dream Ford SRT-10, but his pride and joy was his cherished 95 Impala SS. Impulsive road trips made him happy, as did driving. Anywhere, anytime. Lately, though, his happy place was on the Fort Lauderdale beach, beer in hand at the tiki bar. While he never veered from his New York roots, he considered Lauderdale his home away from home. Throughout the years, he’d vacationed there annually with his best friend, Robbie Keirs, and countless other pals. Brian had hoped to retire to Lauderdale and drive the sand cleaner on the beach. That was the plan. Brian was predeceased by his parents, James and Patricia Byrnes, and his sister, Kerianne Zilberfarb (Byrnes). He is survived by his wife, Kelly, who he married in 2015; sisters Karyn (Matthew) Yucha and Megan Byrnes; and nephews and nieces Kristen, James, Dylan, Diana and Shay. His in-laws include Thomas, Kathleen, Caitlin and Meghan. He also leaves behind numerous life-long friends, neighbors and co-workers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations in Brian’s memory to the Knights of Columbus. Checks should be made out to: Thomas Dongan K of C #1251 Mail to: ATTN: Grand Knight Peter DeNicola 8122 5 Ave. Brooklyn, N.Y. 11209. Gerard Joseph O’Mara
| Brothers It is with heavy hearts that we relay the sad news that Gerard Joseph O’Mara “Pop” our Brother Knight, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on October 5th, 2024, and his soul now rests in God’s hands. Gerard J. O’Mara February 5, 1941 – October 5, 2024 Gerard Joseph O’Mara passed painlessly and peacefully alongside family on October 5th, 2024. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY, Jerry is survived by his loving, devoted, and doting wife of 62 years, Janet (Howlett), and their heartbroken sons and daughter in laws, Richard (Maureen Donnelly) and Raymond (Ellen Snyder). Jerry was the ever proud and loving Grandfather to Connor (Erin O’Connor), Christopher (Brittany Grapstul), Deirdre, and Drew and delighted in their every success. He was the smitten Great Grandfather of Abigail Rose and absolutely glowed in her presence. He leaves behind his caring sister, Patricia and brother-in-law Kevin Murray, and is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jerry was predeceased by his parents Margaret (Duggan) and Patrick Joseph, and his sister Mary Ann and brother-in-law James Ingleterra. A graduate of Pace University with a BBA in Business, Jerry worked most of his life as a Credit Collection Officer for firms in the textile and industrial industries. He eventually migrated to medical collections before he retired and devoted his second career to monthly trips to Atlantic City with Janet for over two decades. His passions included fishing, bowling, reading, gardening, and community service. Jerry was a proud member of the 5th Avenue BID, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and was a Fourth Degree Sir Knight in the Knight of Columbus, having served over 30 years as the Treasurer of Thomas Dongan Council 1251, his beloved home Council where he and Janet made lifelong friends with countless members and their families. An avid fan of the Giants, Mets, and Notre Dame he spent most of his days in misery. But the Lord was kind, and granted his beautiful blue eyes the ability to see each of his squads win the occasional championship. His yearly pilgrimages to Newfoundland to visit Janet’s vast kin were the touchstone of his life. The indelible memories that they forged there with family were never forgotten and shaped their lives. Jerry leaves countless mourning family members back “Home.” Deeply religious, Jerry served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Angels RC Church. Known widely as “Poppi” or “Pop” to the generations of admirers that came to know and respect him, Jerry’s smile and easy-going demeanor were his calling card in life. Educated, thoughtful, reflective, and analytical Jerry was never unprepared for any serious discussion. His geniality also prepared him to engage in some serious chop busting when the conditions called for it as well. He was a complete man in every sense, and will be greatly missed by all those who respected and loved him. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
